Bajos de Mena

BAJOS DE MENA/PARINACOTA URBAN LAB, Santiago

The neighbourhoods Marta Brunet and Volcán III in Bajos de Mena (Puente Alto, Metropolitan Region) and Parinacota (Quilicura, Metropolitan Region) are part of the Housing Regeneration Programme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MINVU), implemented by the Housing and Urbanisation Service (SERVIU). Over the last few years, the programme has highlighted the importance of considering children’s perspectives in the design of public policies.

In order to contribute to this line, the Urban Labs Programme held participatory workshops during 2018 and 2019 in schools in these neighbourhoods to incorporate the perspective of children in the intervention proposals in their territories. In Quilicura, they were held in the Maria Luisa Sepulveda School and in Puente Alto, in the Quitalmahue School and the San Jose Volcano Liceo.

In addition, during 2019 an analysis was conducted on those elements that promote development and risk factors in the spaces where children sleep, study, play, socialise, eat and develop their hygiene habits. At the same time, mothers and/or caregivers were interviewed to understand the dynamics in the use of the spaces.

Interviews and participatory mapping are currently being conducted to analyse the importance of mobility in care work and the changes and difficulties that mobility has undergone during the Covid 19 pandemic.
