The Active Citizenship Programme seeks to contribute to the understanding of urban sustainability in Chile’s schools by linking the research of the Centre for Sustainable Urban Development with the national curriculum through educational material that can be used in class as well as independently. Active Citizenship is implemented in the following products:
Curricular Proposal: Class design, methodological guides and teaching material to support Secondary Education teachers in the subjects of 1) Citizenship Education, 2) Citizen Science, 3) Geography, Territories and Environmental Challenges and 4) Contemporary City.
Urban Sustainability Games: Teaching resources to motivate fun and collaborative learning. Some of these are: Sustentopolis: Juego de cartas para debatir, which is a card game for young people to have debates and discussions based on controversial statements; and Ecoluche: Salta por tu ciudad, a hopscotch-type game where your progress is based on your answers to questions that challenge behaviours and their environmental impact.
Ecos de Sustentabilidad Urbana Podcast: A series of 4 radio episodes addressing urban sustainability and its different dimensions, with a story told by two voice actors, and interviews with researchers from the centre, all of which were developed to support the Active Citizenship curriculum proposal.
Citizenship and Governance Factsheets: Content sheets for Elementary Education that address: 1) Chile: Political and administrative division, 2) Rural and urban space: Urban planning and citizen participation, 3) Municipality: Its attributions and authorities, 4) Communal government: An opportunity for participation, 5) Community life, and 6) My neighbourhood, my space.
