ARE TREES IN THE STREET DANGEROUS BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE CRIMINALS HIDE? WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT, HAVING JOBS OR TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT? THESE ARE SOME OF THE REFLECTIONS THAT CAN BE FOUND IN «SUSTENTOPOLIS: UN JUEGO DE CARTAS PARA DEBATIR»
Focusing on sustainability and citizen participation, CEDEUS Active Citizenship developed this game to spark discussion among groups of young people based on controversial statements on different urban sustainability issues such as sprawl, social inequalities, environmental problems and citizenship. Players must take sides or question the statements made in the cards and argue accordingly during a set amount of time.
In Sustentopolis, once everyone argues, the same group votes for the best argument and the one who convinces the group gets points, but there are random cards that can turn a game around.
The pack of cards has 50 statements in 5 areas: Sustainability, Urban Sprawl, Social Inequalities, Environmental Problems of Cities, Sustainability and Citizenship. Statement samples: “The extraction of raw materials such as minerals or timber is not sustainable” or “Reducing the maximum speed of cars will increase travel times and cause more traffic.”
In addition, there are 14 cards that make the game more dynamic, as shown below: “miss a turn”, “the person with the highest score loses a point”, “change of position”, etc
